Trails & Outdoor Activities

For families who enjoy outdoor adventures, Empie Park offers access to the River to Sea Bikeway and the Cross-City Trail. Paved paths around the park are perfect for biking, walking, or scootering, providing a safe environment for children to explore. Additionally, the park features basketball courts, shuffleboard, bocce ball courts, and horseshoe pits, ensuring there’s always something to engage every family member. Pro Tip: Bring your own equipment if you plan to utilize the games area.

A Tennis Hot Spot
One thing you’ll notice when you look around the park is the number of tennis courts. The park is home to the Althea Gibson Tennis Center. Bring your rackets and balls and play for free on one of the 24 hard tennis courts between sunrise to 11 PM or reserve a court for a fee. The Wilmington’s Greater Wilmington Tennis Association (GWTA) also offers many free and low-cost tennis programs for kids and youth players at the park.

Pro Tip

Bring your own equipment for the games area.

Dog Park

Animal lovers will appreciate the park’s off-leash dog area. The area is divided into sections for large and small dogs. While children under 12 are not permitted inside, the fenced-in area allows families to watch from a safe distance, adding an extra layer of enjoyment for young pet-loving visitors.

Empie Park offers a fun experience for families, combining play, nature, and community engagement. Its diverse amenities help make your visits fun and memorable. So, pack a picnic, grab the kids, and head over to Empie Park for a day of family enjoyment!
